Water Fitness

Come on in, the water's fine!

Adults looking to challenge themselves without stress on their joints or members who just enjoy the water can take advantage of our different water exercise classes. Instructors lead small groups through water aerobics, core strengthening and much more. Gain muscle conditioning and cardiovascular endurance from the aerobic choreography and the resistance of the water. Ideal for all fitness levels & non-swimmers. Water Exercise classes are FREE for Y members! Note that not all classes are offered at all locations. Check Branch schedules by clicking here.

Water Exercise: This class provides the same benefits received in a regular aerobic class, but without the stress that it puts on the body. No swimming skills are necessary. A great way to strengthen your muscles, tone your body and improve your overall fitness.

Senior Splash: Exercises are designed to gain and maintain range of motion and flexibility. Classes include minimal cardiovascular exercise. No swimming skills are necessary.

Arthritis Aquatics: The YMCA Arthritis Foundation Aquatic program is a collaborative effort of two national organizations. It's a recreational exercise program designed to accommodate the abilities of individuals with arthritis and other related diseases. The classes are taught in a group setting with activities and exercises to encourage self-care, improve muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, maintain independence, manage pain and relieve symptoms of arthritis. Water temp: 84-86 degrees or choose the Therapy Pool in Olean (maintained at 94-96 degrees) while observing the instructor leading the class in the main pool. Physician consent may be required.

Aqua Zumba®
: This class blends the Zumba® philosophy with water resistance for one pool party you shouldn’t miss! Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you’ll see why Aqua Zumba® classes are often called exercise in disguise.

Aquatic Rehab: Y-trained staff lead participants through a series of gentle exercises aimed to provide a well-rounded exercise program for those people with slight injuries or those moving from the acute phase of rehab who wish to continue a rehabilitation maintenance program. A physician's consent is required.

ESP Water Workout: ESP stands for ENDURANCE, STRENGTH, and POWER, and that's exactly what you should expect with this 45 minute class. Using an aqua belt, noodles, and oodles of other fun equipment, participants are led through an instructional class in both the deep and shallow end of the pool. You don't need to know how to swim to enjoy this class.

Twinges in the Hinges: This water exercise program incorporates flexibility, strength, and endurance with pool walking and water aerobics. Each class ends with a cool down period and "free" time.
